How much does a ChatGPT agent cost? The real numbers, no detours

Agent mode is included in the subscription — not sold separately

Since 2025, ChatGPT offers an agent mode: you describe a task, it carries it end to end — browsing, research, producing a deliverable — asking for confirmation at sensitive steps. This mode is not a separate product: it comes with the paid plans, at no extra charge, with a monthly mission limit.

The official prices at the time of writing (shown in US dollars; the price displayed at signup in your country may differ with local taxes):

• Free ($0): no access to agent mode.
• Go: the cheapest paid plan, but it does not include agent mode either.
• Plus ($20/month): agent mode included, 40 agent messages per month.
• Pro ($100 or $200/month depending on the tier): 400 agent messages per month.
• Business ($25/user/month billed monthly, 2-user minimum): 40 agent messages per month.

What those limits mean in practice

The counter works per mission: every task you launch in agent mode consumes one message, including scheduled tasks that trigger on their own. Mid-task clarifications don’t count. A mission typically takes 5 to 30 minutes depending on complexity.

Concretely, 40 missions per month on the Plus plan is one or two per working day. That’s enough for one-off tasks — a comparative search, a file to compile — but short if you want to make it a daily workstation. That’s exactly the gap the Pro plan fills, at five to ten times the price.

The three other things people call a “ChatGPT agent”

The word “agent” covers several realities, with very different costs. Before comparing prices, check which one is on the table:

• A custom GPT: a ChatGPT configured with your instructions and documents. Creating and using one is included in the Plus plan, at no extra cost. It’s a specialised chat — it answers, it doesn’t run missions.
• An agent built on the OpenAI API: billed per usage, separately from the ChatGPT subscription. The cost depends on the model and volume — and you need to build (or commission) the agent around it.
• A custom agent delivered by a service provider: quote-based. Amounts vary enormously with scope, and you depend on the provider to understand and modify the system.

The cost nobody talks about: the framing

The subscription price is not the real issue. An agent without a frame — no precise goal, no access to the right information, no rules about what it may do alone — produces generic work you have to redo. Every poorly framed mission burns your quota for a result you fix afterwards.

The difference between a chat that answers and an agent that works isn’t the model or the price: it’s the written frame you give it. A goal, the useful data, the autonomy level, the guardrails. That framing costs nothing in subscription fees — it costs thinking time, once.

Where to start without wasting money

The cheapest path is also the simplest: start with the Plus plan at $20 per month, and test agent mode on one well-defined task — not ten. If you exhaust your 40 monthly missions on tasks that genuinely save you time, upgrading to Pro is justified by numbers, not by fear of missing out.
