Is Claude Code free? What’s included, what isn’t

No, Claude Code is not included in Claude’s free plan: using it requires at least Anthropic’s Pro subscription (listed at $20 per month at the time of writing) or pay-as-you-go usage credits. What is free: the software itself — it downloads and installs at no cost — and the regular Claude chat, which lets you judge the AI before paying anything. Let’s untangle it.

The short answer: free software, paid access

Claude Code is made of two things people often mix up. On one side, the software: it downloads for free from Anthropic’s website, on Mac, Windows or Linux. On the other, access to the AI that powers it: that part is paid.

On first launch, Claude Code asks you to log in to an account. And that is where Claude’s free plan stops: it gives you the chat, not Claude Code. You need a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise subscription — or a developer account with prepaid credits.

What Claude’s free plan includes (and doesn’t)

Claude’s free plan does exist: with no credit card, you can talk to the assistant on the web, on mobile and in the desktop app, within daily usage limits. That is enough to test the AI’s quality and have it write or analyse documents via copy-paste.

However, Anthropic’s pricing page is explicit: Claude Code only appears from the Pro plan upwards. On the free plan, you cannot launch the agent that works directly in your folders — which is precisely the feature the subscription pays for.

The paid options, concretely

At the time of writing (June 2026), three routes give access to Claude Code. Prices are listed in dollars on Anthropic’s website and change regularly: always check the official page before committing.

  • The Pro plan: $20 per month ($17 per month billed annually). It is the entry tier that includes Claude Code, and the right starting point for individual use.
  • The Max plans: from $100 per month. Same features as Pro, but with much higher usage limits — for people who run the agent all day.
  • Pay-as-you-go credits: through an account on Anthropic’s developer console, you load prepaid credits and pay per use, without a subscription. Handy for a one-off trial, but less predictable than a flat plan.

How to judge it without paying

The simplest move: use Claude’s free chat to evaluate the AI itself. If the quality of its answers on your topics — your documents, your line of work, your language — convinces you in the chat, Claude Code runs on the same models, with the added ability to act in your files.

The other lead: access terms move often at Anthropic — trial offers, welcome credits on the console, specific programmes. Rather than trusting a dated article (including this one), check the official pricing page at the moment you decide.

What you can prepare for free, today

One thing costs nothing and makes all the difference the day you subscribe: preparing the folder Claude Code will work in. The tool reads the files in the folder you open it in — in particular instruction files such as AGENTS.md — to understand your job, your rules and your missions before acting.

That is exactly what the Claude Code AI Workspace Kit prepares: a Context Folder tailored to your line of work, ready from your very first launch. The kit is being built: sign up on its page to be told when it ships.

Frequently asked questions
Is Claude Code free?

No. The software downloads for free, but using it requires a paid Claude subscription (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise) or prepaid credits on Anthropic’s developer console. Claude’s free plan gives access to the chat, not to Claude Code.

What is the minimum cost of Claude Code?

The cheapest subscription option is the Pro plan, listed at $20 per month ($17 per month billed annually) at the time of writing. Prices change: check Anthropic’s official pricing page before committing.

Can you try Claude Code before paying?

Not with Claude’s free plan. The best no-cost test: judging the AI’s quality through the free chat, which runs on the same models. For a one-off trial of Claude Code, pay-as-you-go credits via the developer console avoid taking a subscription.

What is Claude’s free plan good for, then?

Using the assistant in chat mode — web, mobile, desktop — within daily limits, no credit card needed. You can write, analyse and translate via copy-paste. What is missing: the agent that acts directly in your folders, reserved for paid plans.
